LA Editionen

LA is planning to convert its historic barn into a studio and exhibition space.

To mark the occasion, we have asked four of your favourite artists from Los Angeles to develop a small series of editions, exclusively made for LA.
In keeping with the concept of the project, each of these works also serves a practical purpose -
come get yourself a Johannes Büttner pendant lamp, Birke Gorm salad servers, a Zuzanna Czebatul side table or a Jonas von Ostrowski door knob.

The proceeds will be used to build a transparent house with heating and a bathroom inside LA`s barn.

Zuzanna Czebatul

*1986, lives in Berlin, studied at Städelschule Frankfurt and Cooper Union and Hunter College, NYC. Recent solo shows at Kunstpalais Erlangen, sans titre Gallery in Paris, Kunsthal Thy in Stenbjerg DK, group shows at Between Bridges, Berlin, Neuer Kunstverein Mittelrhein, Sammlung Philara Düsseldorf, Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, Berlinische Galerie, Museum Morsbroich, A7 Athens Biennale, PiK Deutz, Cologne and Studio Berlin, Berghain.

During Zuzanna`s residency in LA in July 2021, she created the oven sculpture „Die Schmelze“. Its six ton brick body is covered in a marbled concrete glaze, which was developed by the Berlin artist and applied by hand in countless steps. The expansive shape of the oven can be understood as an inviting gesture: as a place of community, it serves for collective baking, eating and sharing.

Zuzanna`s sculptures for YFAFLA, which can be used as side tables, are made of the same two-tone marbled concrete as her oven in Los Angeles. Refering to Zuzanna`s concern with ruins, monuments and their role in mechanisms of power, they are assembled from fragments of a specially made concrete slab.

Birke Gorm

*1986, Hamburg, lives and works in Vienna. Recent solo exhibitions at the Museum Sønderjylland, Tønder, Croy Nielsen, Vienna, MAK Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon, Videbækm, Politikens Forhal, Copenhagen. She was awarded the Strabag Art Award, Vienna in 2021.

Birke was one of the first residents in Los Angeles. The works she produced in the House with Clear Shapes and Complex entrance and the nearby barn in late fall 2020 were shown the following year during the first Barnale. Among other things, works from her series IOU were on display - tree branches which, at the point where a twig emerges from them, are provided with carved faces that stick out their tongues.

Based on the carvings of her IOU series, Birke developed a pair of sculptures for YFAFLA that can be used as salad servers. Two fitting carved branches are attached to a found set of salad servers with cable ties. Of this model a small edition of 20 pieces was hand-cast in two-colored, food-safe epoxy resin.

Johannes Büttner

*1985, lives in Berlin, studied at UdK Berlin and de Ateliers in Amsterdam. In his installations and films, he investigates the interactions between people and technology, future scenarios and the new economy. His works have been shown at Urbane Künste Ruhr, the Istanbul Biennale and the Kasseler dok film festival. 2023 he was nominated for the German Short Film Award.

During his residency in Los Angeles in the summer of 2023, Johannes together with Annegret von Feiertag shot a science fiction film with actors from the neighboring village. During the second Barnale, LA`s big biannual summershow, the completed film was shown in an installation hanging from the barn`s ceiling, consisting of several vintage flat screens arranged in a circle and connected in series.

Johannes`s contribution to the first edition of YFAFLA consists of a series of three sculptures based on his installation in LA and a prior work, shown 2022 at Kunstverein Langenhagen. Different microwave housings, which, stripped of most of their inner workings and fitted with a suitable light source, hang from the ceiling by their cables, working as pendant lamps. Watches rotate inside on the microwave plates.

Jonas von Ostrowski

Jonas von Ostrowski

*1981 in Günsterode, studied in Hamburg and Brussels. Jonas has made several stage designs at theatres, including the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Theater Bremen. He was curator of the project space Prince of Wales in Munich. Drawings and objects of his can be found in the Bayerische and others. In 2018 he was awarded the Bayerischer Staatsförderpreis, in 2019 the Stipendium für bildende Kunst der Landeshauptstadt München and in 2021/22 he was working scholar of the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn. In 2016 he began working on Los Angeles.

Jonas is the initiator of Los Angeles. His inhabitable and mostly self-built sculpture „House with Clear Shapes and a Complex Entrance“ was the starting point of the project and has been home to residents and guests since its completion in 2020.

Jonas is currently working on a project for a newly built elementary school in Munich. „346 Untitled Sculptures“ are going to replace the door handles of the classrooms, restrooms etc.. His contribution to YFAFLA consists of an edition related to this work. Cast directly from quickly formed waxmodels, the sculptures are made from anodized aluminium. Fitted with a special bracket, they can be attached to almost any front door at the place of the door knob.
